Hi lovely, thanks for writing. I get asked this a lot. It is also a question I have asked a lot so I have been on both sides of the coin on this one.
I think every single writer has their own unique path. Mine has been very unconventional. One day, I was feeling pretty down, not sure where I was headed next. Randomly I decided to post some poems on Tumblr. A lit blog came along and re-blogged it (I have no idea how they found me, as I only had 40 followers at the time.) My poems went viral so I self published Love & Misadventure. I only expected to sell a few but it started making bestseller lists so I was approached by a couple of literary agents and decided to go with Writers House because they rep some of my fave authors. So that was how it happened for me.
I think it’s a wonderful time for indie authors. If you write with a unique voice and produce work that is consistently good, it’s almost impossible not to get noticed. Remember, finding that voice can take time. For me to get to this point, it has taken well over a decade. And I am still learning and growing as a writer, I still have a long way to go.
If you’re truly passionate about writing, nothing will pry that pen away from your hand. It will be something you will default to because it’s who you are. And as long as you believe in yourself, it will happen for you too! I promise.
